Hope Blossoms: A Love Story in Pink

Hope Blossoms: A Love Story in Pink

Nano-Fiction | ~100-Words | April 2024

The following nano-fiction was written for the Tadpole Press 100-Word Writing Contest. To say it was difficult to write is an understatement. I wanted to create a piece that reflects my own journey rediscovering my voice after two years of treatment for breast cancer (more on that in another post.) So of course, why not make it more difficult by limiting myself to 100-words or less? (Yes, I am a masochist.) Thank you to everyone who stuck with me as I attempted to launch a writing career while in the midst of one of the hardest periods of my life. I grateful for each and every one of you.

Cherry blossoms, a riot of pink, swirled around Lúcia and David. The breeze a soft melody after the cacophony of the infusion pumps. David's rhythmic typing, a soothing counterpoint. Lúcia’s fingers hovered over her keyboard, the once vibrant instrument silenced by the poisons that defined her last two years. David's hand, a warm anchor, found hers. A soft half-smile touched his lips in silent understanding. A spark ignited in Lúcia's eyes. Her fingers flew, each keystroke a testament to their love and her returning voice. "The salty spray kissed Isla's lips, whispering promises of adventure."

I dedicate this story to Russell - my partner, my love, my muse. Thank you docinho for lending me your strength during this journey.
